Training Your Pooch to Wear Dog Clothes

by admin on April 22, 2009

Fashion trends recently have shown that dog clothes are all the rage. Everyone seems to want to dress his/her small dog up in some type of outfit and show them off to people during a walk or other type of outing.

The real issue that many owners are typically facing lately is that some dogs want to get rid of their clothes right away, often by chewing or scratching at the clothes. This can tear up a dog’s clothes in a hurry, wasting money that the owner may have spent on putting the dog in an outfit in the first place.

So, how can you keep your dog from tearing up his or her clothes? The main goal is to keep your dog from going after the clothes in the first place. You should try to keep your dog interested in chew toys, bones, or other objects that can draw his attention away from the clothes that he’s wearing.

It’s important to note that your dog should not be kept dressed up all day to begin with. That can cause him to become uncomfortable in his new dog clothes, which will simply end with him destroying what he’s wearing. Start off easy by keeping your dog dressed for 10-15 minutes at first to allow him to get used to the clothing he’s wearing. After your dog is used to wearing clothes for that amount of time, you can slowly progress to allowing your dog to wear his clothes for longer. Slowly building up the time your dog is dressed will help your dog feel more “natural” in his clothes. He’ll simply start believing that it’s normal to wear dog clothes.

Proper fitting of dog clothes is also an important thing to keep in mind. If you buy clothes that are too tight, your dog will be uncomfortable and try to scratch or bite them off. Conversely, if you buy clothes that are too loose, he’ll do the same thing. You may need to try various sizes before you find that your dog is comfortable, so feel free to experiment.

If you like to put ribbons or other such decorations on your dog, try to avoid doing this until you feel that your dog is comfortable wearing his clothes for a long period of time. Dressing up a dog with bows, ribbons, or other “frills” before he’s used to wearing clothing will just make him uncomfortable. Just like I mentioned above, build up in stages.

I hope that this article has helped you learn how to select and properly train your dog to accept his new dog clothes.

Fun Dog Clothes for Fido

by admin on April 21, 2009

Dressing dogs in cozy sweaters has been a trait of dog lovers for sometime, but the trend swing into full gear as celebrities pamper their four legged friends as well as they dress themselves. From Tinkerbell, Daisy and Bambi to Honey Child and Cleopatra, we’ve seen Paris, Nicole and Jessica tote their pups in everything from sunglasses and dresses to sweaters and the most adorable shoes.

As a shopaholic, it is easy to understand the draw to dog clothes and pet apparel. If you think baby clothes are cute, nothing is more adorable than little hoodies or dresses for dogs. These designer clothes bring creativity, fashion and humor to light leaving everyone who crosses your pets path feeling giddy. Love it or hate it, there could be worse things to spend your money on than threads for Fido, but few things bring a smile to so many people.

You can find formal attire, casual clothes, costumes and themed clothing in for dogs of all sizes. Whether you want to show off your spoiled puppies or your looking to protect them from the elements, there are tons of clothes to build your dogs wardrobe. Is your pooch dainty and delicate or rugged and rowdy? Princess dresses or hooded sweatshirts, t-shirts and pajamas are available in just about every personality you can imagine. From rock to jock, ballerina to brainiac, you can find the style that best fits you and your pet.

There are lots of fun styles and hilarious designs you can choose from to dress your dog to the nines or share your passions and favorite pastimes with your dog. My favorite are the skull and cross bones tank for my dog. I have one similar for my daughter and the when the two are dressed in the matching tanks, it makes a stroll through the neighborhood or a ride to the grocery store more enjoyable. My daughter loves it and I have to admit, it keeps her entertained, and people we pass smile with amusement.

Some people don’t understand spending money on something like dog clothes, but my philosophy is if it makes you happy, others smile and doesn’t break the bank, why not? If you’re looking for unique pet apparel or designer dog clothes, one of my favorite sites has a hilarious inventory. MichiPet.com carries brands with names like Barktoria’s Secret, Kate Spayed and Chewy Vuiton making shopping for dog clothes just as fun as playing dress up with my dogs.

So the next time you’re frustrated because you couldn’t find that cute dress in your size or the purse you want is out of your budget, consider picking up a new outfit for your furry friend and you’ll probably spend less and enjoy it more.

Tips for Fitting Your Dog Clothes

by admin on April 20, 2009

There is no doubt that every one of our four-footed friends is built a little differently, whether it’s two different Maltese’s or two different German shepherds, and getting dog clothes that fit appropriately just takes a few minutes and a simple measuring device. Of course, a ruler won’t do, you need a cloth measuring tape, and can use a metal measuring tape if that’s all you have. You can also use a piece of string, and then lay it on the ruler but careful measurements will help make your dog clothes not only look good, but also be comfortable for your best friend.

This is especially important if you have a dog of the bulldog variety, boxer, or even a stout Boston Terrier. You’ll want to measure from the base of the tail up to the neck where you would prefer to see the coat lie comfortably. If you have a stout chested best friend, or one who is a bit overweight, you may want to move up a size. And of course if you have one of the thinner running bred dogs such as a greyhound, Saluki, or even a smaller, lighter framed Chihuahua, you may want to drop down a size. Any time you go up a size or down a size, understand that the coat will be shorter or longer, and may cause interference with biological activities.

This is especially true with male dogs, be sure to order a coat that will be comfortable for your dog to relieve himself. Many are terribly uncomfortable in coats or sweaters if they feel interference. You want a dog coat or sweater that is comfortable all the way around for your friend, you’ll want one that is not to tight or loose, too long or short, or a dog coat that interferes with biological activities.

There’s a wide variety of styles, sizes, and shapes of sweaters and coats for your four-footed friend. And here at http://www.rockstarpooch.com wewant each and every one of them to feel like a rock star; perfect fit helps your dog enjoy their sweater or coat, T-shirt or tank, hat or booties, and we’ve got designer wear for your Rock Star. Most dog owners would agree that dogs do not need to wear clothes, since they were born with a built in fur coat. Why defy nature?

Other dog owners maintain that their dogs need to wear clothes, since they will feel cold in cold weather like human do. Why denied them the apparel to keep them warm. And then there are those other dog owners who just dress their dog to look fashionable and cute, simply for their own delight.

In spite of all the different opinions, there are however real reasons to consider making your dog wear clothes. Modern dogs do not have to endure the ravages of nature as they did back in the days of wolf packs, so our pet dogs have become accustom to the same climate controlled environment we enjoy.

Today, even veterinarians agree that domesticated dogs physiology has evolved and adjusted to human environmental standards, therefore they do need extra protection from the cold as much as their human counterparts. If you are trying to decide if your dog needs clothes apparel in the practical sense, a good indicator is the type of dog breed and the environment you live in.

Obviously dog clothes are not a must to every dog breed living in warm climate. It is typically in these warm climates that dog owners only dress their dog in fashionable little outfits. Owners of small dogs and dogs without a lot of fur living in a cold climate may choose to put their dog in some sort of clothing.

For example, small breeds like Chihuahuas lose heat quickly and easily, so a sweater would be essential in rainy or cooler climates. In areas where the weather is bitterly cold, a sweater and insulated dog booties may be required. The best bet during these bitter cold months, however, is to keep your small dog indoors.

Dogs that have had medical treatments that result in the loss of fur will often need at least some protection from the weather until their fur grows back. This also applies to dogs that have been shaved for agility and show reasons.

Large dogs that have short hair, such as a Great Dane, may need a shirt or a sweater in cold climates. There are several online stores that specialize in custom dog clothes and these would be the best bet for purchasing clothes for large dog breeds.

Some dog breeds that are acclimated to living in cold conditions do not need clothes at all even in extremely cold weather. Examples of such breeds that enjoy the cold are the Siberian Husky, Great Pyrenees and the Saint Bernard. Besides, putting clothes on a large dog that is used to being outdoors would be plain silly - they would get too hot and get heat stroke easily! The only type of clothing these dogs might need would be insulated booties if they spend long periods of time outdoors.

Some dog owners may have the opinion that dressing your dog in clothes is cruel and defying nature; however, under practical circumstances such as during bitter cold winter time, putting apparels on your dog could keep them comfortable, warm and even save their life.

It used to be the hot thing to dress parent and child alike. This day and age, however, the child being dressed is four-legged and furry. The younger generation is having less children and satisfying their parental desires with pampered pooches. So, there are a large number of people looking to spoil their dogs and themselves by dishing out the dough on designer dog clothes. Just like human clothing, dog clothing designs get their inspiration on runways around the world and lead many different styles and colors to be the in thing this season.

The inventive colors and designs on models in Milan, Paris and New York have found their way into dog clothing boutiques around the world. Designers have only a short time after the human fashion shows to develop their new lines to go along with what the parents will be wearing. “The dog version of clothing must not only match human styles, it must also be functional for the dog” said Onika Carroll, a designer for Elizabeth Austin. All of these challenges lead to a varied array of dog clothing ranging from the cute and simple to the haute couture.

The different styles that are in this season include an assortment of day and evening wear as well as beach wear. Longer dresses and even ball gowns are going to be hot thanks to the popularity of the TV show “Dancing with the Stars”. The good news for retailers is and customers is that there is a wide variety of gowns and dresses to fit anyone’s taste. Colors like pink, lilac and lime green are strong this season, and polka dots and floral designs are prominent as well. Another fashion choice that should be popular is having sequins or appliqués of hearts and butterflies. Pooch parents want their girl dogs to be dainty and their boy dogs to be cool or tough. A very popular print this season for boys and some girls is anything camouflage. The bottom line is, there’s going to be plenty for everyone to choose what style fits them and their baby best.

Three New Trends in Small Dog Clothes

by admin on April 15, 2009

Watch out North America, I have seen the future of dog clothes and I am not so sure that I liked it all that much. I had a chance to travel to London recently for a business trip to absorb new fashion trends in the dog clothing industry. This industry is now large enough to have its very own international dog clothes show, so that means that the category is now worthy of taking notice and exploring the opportunities to help people on this side of the pond show their love for their dog. There were three major trends in dog clothing that are forthcoming. I would all two of them trends and one of them an outright wave.

The first trend is the trend towards clothing that is designed to be worn in layers. Dogs can now wear a light undergarment for spring and fall types of days that is covered by a heavier sweater or sweatshirt like material that is capable of being removed on short notice to allow the smaller canine to enjoy a bit more fresh air on walks around the local park. The designs for these layered clothes are available in many styles, from sporty to traditional, preppy to gothic. The clientele that these items are intended for are the older generation who has an empty nest and lavishes love onto their 4 legged friend or the sophisticated woman who takes her dog everywhere by having it next to her in a dog carrier.

The second trend that was observed on the trip is the movement in full body garments. These garments are designed to allow your dog to go with you in extreme weather conditions outside to play in the snow or to tag along on a ski trip. The garments fit closely onto each of the four legs of the animal after being set upon their back in order to get into the clothing article. The zipper or buttons are then fastened on the underside so as not to show any of the seams. It gives the appearance that the animal has on long johns like so many of us in the Midwest wore when we were kids on cold days. Again, the styles are fantastic and the colors and textures of materials knew no boundaries. I especially liked some of the hand made sets that were available for sale at the show. While I was a little concerned about the ability of the suppliers to meet what could be a great demand, their quality and design styles seemed more in line with that of the layered garments seen at the show.

The third and final trend to mention is that of the growing popularity of the items. With more empty nesters showering their pets with love and affection, the dog clothing industry is enjoying quite a nice boom. As new products are introduced it will likely lead to fragmentation of the market for now, this market and product category is a great place for retailers to begin to offer clients high quality prices at attractive margins.

Chuck R Stewart reviewed small dog clothes while attending an international dog show in London. He was struck by the high quality and great selection of the dog clothes displayed at the show.

Dog Clothes - Top Four Reasons

by admin on April 14, 2009

What is the obsession with small dog clothes? It is very rare these days to see a tiny dog that is not wearing some sort of clothing or hair bow or at the very least a rhinestone charm attached to his collar. Of course there is always the functionality theory of clothing dogs. However, most pet owners who partake in this extravagant hobby do it for pure fun. We love to see the new styles that come out each season or cannot wait to get the hottest new trendy shoes. When we have children, the focus tends to turn toward them. We spend our time and money making sure that they are fashion forward and have the coolest trends. Sure that is great but our children need to wear clothes and shoes, right? So, why do we dress up dogs when we do not have to do it?

There are so many different reasons that people dress up their tiny pooches. Like stated earlier, there is no disputing that there are functional reasons for clothing our dogs in extreme weather conditions or if they are a hairless breed that needs protection. This is usually not why we do it. There are four main reasons that people dress up their dogs in tiny dog clothes. Some people may dispute these reasons but they are not at all negative.

Reason one: The most obvious reason is because they are just so darn cute! There is no arguing that a tiny little dog in a cute little dress or a sweater is adorable.

Reason two: We dress them up to draw attention. This is not meant in a negative way. Dressing our dog up when we take them out for a walk in the park can make for great start up conversation. Anyway, we love it when people say our children are adorable. So why can we not love it for people to compliment our dog.

Reason three: Our dog can sometimes be an accessory to what we ourselves are wearing. Many high society folks that you see carrying their dogs around with them, will change their dogs collar, clothes, shoes, hair accessories or carrying case to match what they are wearing.

Reason four: Expression! We can say so much about ourselves by what we wear. This translates over into doggie world too. We can express our own personality or the personality of our pooch through the dog clothes that we choose for our furry friends.

Regardless of why we dress our dogs up, one thing is for sure that it is a trend that does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. If your pooch will let you dress him up, then join in on the doggy fashion frenzy.

I hope you found this article about why we put dog clothes on our pooches interesting.

Fashionable Dog Clothes - The Real Score!

by admin on April 13, 2009

What’s in for humans is also what’s in for dogs as some people would assert. But is that really the case or is there something much more than that? Actually fashionable dog clothes are getting in the circle of fashion today. But what many owners don’t realized is the fact that pets might not be thinking the same as them. You might be finding it cute when you see your pooch at its cutest outfit but are you sure that it is happy? Of course your pet can’t answer you but you can take a look at its behavior when it is wearing something.

You should try to keep in mind that animals are not used to wearing clothes because they have fur. But unlike humans who need clothes for their bare skin, canines don’t need extra layers. I’ll repeat that, dogs do not need clothes. Yes, they don’t because they were designed by nature to cope with the environment just the way they are. However in every rule comes its own exceptions. Such as very harsh weather which can either too hot or too cold. Another one is its present health condition, such as hair loss problems. Even if some will justify their reasons about fashionable dog clothes the core reason for wearing them is protection.

Now if they serve another purpose such as an expression of personality then it deviates from the core reason. Some fashionable owners might be having a violent reaction by now but please try to see the situation using your pooch’s perspective. I have nothing against fashionable dog clothes because after all it is your choice as the owner. But just make some considerations about your pet’s feelings. Sometimes owners get too clouded with excitement that you forgot to consider whether your pooch would be comfortable. During hot summers you let your pet wear dog scarves and sweaters which seem inappropriate.

Actually fashionable dog clothes are not that bad just as long as they are worn properly. Know the accurate time and place for letting your pooch wear them. But it should be better if you let it as plain dog clothes because what counts most at the end of the day is a comfortable and satisfied pet. And one more thing, fashionable dog clothes should never get in the way of comfort. Maybe the fabric irritates your pooch’s skin causing rashes and other skin problems. You should choose clothing apparel not because your pet would look terrific in them but also the materials used.

On the other hand if you want to attain balance between fashion and comfort try to select the materials first before the style. You can even customize your pet’s apparel by buying a comfortable material and have some dressmaker do it for your pooch using your own style. Just don’t forget to keep track with the weather. Fashionable dog clothes should be worn only when it does not cause any discomfort and irritation to your pet’s skin. Fashion should have a well grounded reason not just to show off. That way you are sure that your pet will feel comfy and fashionable at the same time.
